Cala Coticcio (Caprera): how to get there by boat

Index

Nicknamed the “Tahiti of the Mediterranean”Coticcio Cove is the most photographed and desired beach in the La Maddalena archipelago. White sand, waters that fade from turquoise to emerald, imposing pink granite rocks shaped by the wind: it is a masterpiece of nature.

But there is a problem: access by land is severely restricted (closed number, compulsory reservations, controlled path). The solution? Get there from the sea, the right way, with those who know every corner of this island.

Here is how to reach Cala Coticcio by boat with GD Nautical and our skipper Gabriele, departing from the port of Palau.

1. Why it is worth arriving at Cala Coticcio by sea

2. How to reach Cala Coticcio by boat from Palau: step by step

Step 1 - Departure from the port of Palau

The excursion departs from the port of Palau, one of the most convenient embarkation points for the La Maddalena Archipelago. Gabriele awaits you at the jetty, welcomes you on board and, after a briefing, off we go.

Step 2 - Crossing to the Strait of Bonifacio and Caprera (approx. 30-40 minutes)

From Palau we sail eastwards, skirting the island of Santo Stefano, and then take the Coin Pass (the channel between La Maddalena and Caprera). Already during navigation, the first marvels can be seen: crystal-clear waters, stacks and Mediterranean maquis.

Step 3 - Entrance to Cala Coticcio

The entrance to the cove is narrow and protected by imposing granite cliffs. Not all boats can approach. Skipper Gabriele knows exactly:

  • The safe access corridor

  • The depth of the seabed (watch out for outcropping rocks)

  • The ideal spot to drop anchor

Step 4 - Anchoring

The anchor is positioned at regulatory distance from the beach (usually over 50-100 metres, depending on the ordinances). The seabed is mixed sand and posidonia: Gabriele always avoids damaging the protected marine plant.

Step 5 - Enjoy the cove

More can be done from here:

  • Bathing directly from the yacht (descending the ladder)

  • Snorkelling in the clear waters

  • Reaching the beach by swimming or by tender (if allowed by seasonal regulations)

  • Photographing the scenario with the best light
